U.S. Representative Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) released the following statement after voting against the Democrats’ latest harmful legislation:

Democrats’ out-of-control Washington spending coupled with a blatant attack on American energy have forced our economy into a recession after two straight quarters of negative economic growth. Naturally, the Democrats are now moving forward with their newest bill, the ridiculously named “Inflation Reduction Act,” and they are ignoring the negative impacts this will have on hardworking Americans.  It’s loaded with budget gimmicks, and it would: raise taxes on every American – including a “heat your home” tax; force price controls on prescription drugs that will reduce development of new medical cures and cost lives; continue a ban on oil and gas development in many areas; and waste billions of dollars in Green New Deal slush funds. This isn’t an inflation reduction bill – it’s a “pass everything we want now before we lose control of Congress” bill.

As most Americans have heard by now, this legislation would also empower and fund an 87,000-strong army of new IRS agents to harass taxpayers and small businesses. We know the IRS is capable of this; they targeted conservative groups during the Obama Administration.

In spite of all these negative impacts, Democrats and the White House are pressing forward, and are actually bragging about an 8.5% July inflation rate while food prices and the cost of everyday items soar, hurting middle and low-income families the most.  The American people deserve better!
