Congressman Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) released the following statement after he introduced H. Res. 486, honoring the life and legacy of Belmont County native John Havlicek:

Last week, Congressman Bill Johnson introduced H. Res. 486 to honor the life and legacy of John Havlicek, one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history.

Havlicek was born in Martins Ferry and was a three-sport All-State athlete at Bridgeport High School. As an All-American at Ohio State, he helped the team win the 1960 National Championship. Havlicek had an amazing professional career as well, playing 16 seasons with the Boston Celtics and winning 8 NBA Championships – including being named the 1974 NBA Finals MVP.

“I’m pleased to honor this sports legend from Eastern Ohio,” Bill Johnson said. “Not only was he major force on the court, but he was also widely known for his charitable work off it. Both during his career and during his post-basketball life, this Professional Basketball Hall of Famer set a great example, and used his fame to help others.”

Havlicek raised money tirelessly for children with rare diseases, disabilities, and genetic disorders.

Johnson added: “Most importantly, John Havlicek was a loving father and husband, and was considered by friends and former teammates as a man who inspired others to be their best.”
