Congressman Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) released the following statement after the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) awarded a grant to Marietta Memorial Hospital (MMH) through the Distance Learning and Telemedicine program:

Today, the USDA announced that 12 rural communities, including Marietta, were awarded grants through the Distance Learning and Telemedicine program. This grant will help MMH implement a telemedicine project to address opioid misuse disorders. Interactive video equipment will be installed at eight separate locations in Washington, Athens, Vinton, Jackson, and Meigs counties. The project will increase rural access to education, training, and health care resources, and serve over 35,000 residents.

“I’ve long advocated for increased use of telemedicine, especially to help in our battle with opioid and drug addiction.  In some areas, like Southeast Ohio, it can – and already is – having a major impact,” Bill Johnson said. “I know that Marietta Memorial Hospital and their talented staff will put this money to good use. We’re making progress on fighting the scourge of opioid abuse, but there is still more to do. This grant will go a long way in these efforts.”

The Distance Learning and Telemedicine program helps rural communities use the unique capabilities of telecommunications to help people connect to each other, overcoming low population density.
