Congressman Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) released the following statement after speaking at the International Christian Concern's (ICC) Policy Day:

Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking at International Christian Concern’s Policy Day, where I delivered an important message: “the ultimate freedom for the human species is the freedom to be able to have a relationship with God almighty under the terms and conditions that they choose.”

Not all countries recognize freedom of religion, and we are seeing an alarming number of Christians, and people of other faiths, being persecuted abroad. Perhaps the most startling example comes out of Iran, where Maryam Rostampour and Marziyeh Amirizadeh were arrested and sentenced to execution by hanging – simply because they are Christians and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Despite their horrific persecution, they found hope and purpose to help other victims of religious persecution.

As Iranian oppression continues to fuel the persecution of Christians and other human rights violations, it is important for America to remain compassionate and understanding of those who do not have the benefit of religious freedom. Our problem is with the Iranian regime – the leading state sponsor of terrorism – not the people of Iran, who continue to demand freedom, prosperity, accountability, and a voice in determining the direction of their country.
