Congressman Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) released the following statement after President Trump announced a new proposal to end the partial government shutdown and provide badly needed funds for securing our southern border:

Today’s announcement demonstrates the President is willing to come to the table to negotiate in good faith. Now, we wait for the response from Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. They can accept the proposal, get some of what they claim to be a major priority on the DACA issue, and end this partial government shutdown.

On the other hand, if they aren’t willing to accept the President’s proposal, then it will be clear to everyone that they intend to put their desire to “resist” President Trump ahead of the very people they’ve pledged to help for years.  They will, in fact, be demonstrating they actually have no interest in solving the DACA issue, choosing instead to use it as a political tool. It will also show they would rather have federal workers continue to go without pay than give even one inch to help President Trump resolve this impasse.

This proposal offered by President Trump is one where each side gives up something to gain something.  And, the only reason for Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, to oppose this proposal is that if they actually don’t care about keeping America safe.  But, if they say no, I’ll continue to stand with the President as he works to ensure our southern border is protected.
