Rep. Bill Johnson (R) took a tour of the Marietta Electrical JATC apprenticeship program facility on Route 7 Thursday.

The five-year program provides on-the-job paid training as well as college credit classes. At the end of the program, trainees almost have an associates degree and are a full-fledged journeyman wireman.

"You have an opportunity to make money, instead of pay for class," training coordinator Daryl Jones said. "We don't charge anything for our apprenticeship program. It costs you zero dollars to join our program. And you go out and start making money"

"It' s so vitally important that we're thinking ahead as we make workforce development programs," Rep. Bill Johnson said, "partnering with career tech centers, with high schools, with junior colleges and community colleges."

The Marietta JATC program started back in 1956. This training facility opened its doors three years ago.
