U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson will kick off his Leadership Seminar at Leetonia High School on Friday.

Johnson will be speaking to approximately 30 student leaders from 1:45 to 2:30 p.m. at the high school, the first of monthly meetings that will run through April.

The students will meet each month with various guest speakers including local elected officials, labor and business leaders and other notable community members.

According to schools Superintendent Rob Mehno, Johnson’s office selected Leetonia as one of various high schools across his Sixth Congressional District to participate in the program Johnson’s office said is aimed at helping “young people build strong leadership skills that can be utilized in all aspects of life,” citing similar assistance in his development as a leader.

“It’s exciting and we’re honored to have been chosen,” Mehno said.

Students were selected from student council, student government, national honor society and other community service organizations, Mehno said.

The students will have the opportunity to build their leadership skills through the program and having the chance to participate in Johnson’s program is a reflection of the good work they are already doing.

“It’s an extension of all the positive things going on in Leetonia schools and the fact that we have great young men and women who are leaders,” he explained.

“It’s great that the congressman has recognized the leadership here and wants to help cultivate that, continue to build programs to make our students leaders not only in the school, but in the community as well, as they move forward with the education and careers.”
