Congressman Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) released the following statement after House Republicans released their Unified Tax Reform Framework:

It’s been over 30 years since the last major tax code overhaul. Now is the best opportunity in a generation to deliver real middle-class tax relief, fuel major economic growth, and create good-paying jobs. Republicans are determined to change the status quo, and give the American people the tax system they deserve: one that is simpler, fairer, and more competitive.

The framework shrinks the current seven tax brackets into three. It doubles the standard deduction so that average middle-class families can keep more of their hard-earned paychecks. It significantly increases the Child Tax Credit. As part of the effort to provide both simplicity and fairness, many deductions used by the wealthy are set to be eliminated, while keeping provisions to launch the American Dream for millions, including tax incentives for home mortgage interest and charitable contributions. Small businesses – our country’s prime job creators, will see their maximum tax rate significantly decrease. Additionally, the framework  imposes a one-time, low tax rate on wealth that has accumulated overseas – so there is no tax incentive to keep the money offshore.

Before I was elected to Congress, I led a tax-reform group - this issue was one of the reasons I ran for office in the first place. It’s very important to me, and this plan is about helping all Americans – specifically the Middle Class – improve their quality of life. We must get this done.
