Congressman Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) released the following statement after President Donald Trump signed the Department of Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblower Act into law. This bipartisan legislation reforms the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) by allowing the Secretary to dismiss poorly-performing employees and those who engage in misconduct while ensuring appropriate due process protections for whistleblowers:

“It’s pretty stunning, but prior to last Friday, the VA did not have the ability to remove ‘rotten apples’.  Instead, the VA would place poorly-performing employees on leave, allowing them to continue receiving a paycheck during this administrative leave period. This was an extreme disservice to veterans and the overwhelming majority of VA employees who work hard every day to serve them. This could not continue, and I have been advocating for this reform since I was first elected to serve you in Congress.

“This is another positive reform - we’ve made several this year - that will improve the services our veterans receive, but there is still more important work to do. Friday's action by President Trump will give Secretary Shulkin – and all future VA secretaries – another tool to hold the VA accountable, and remove poorly-performing employees so the VA can hire the best personnel to fulfill the promises we made as a country to provide for our veterans health and well-being. I will keep working on behalf of, and advocating for, our nation’s heroes.”
