Representative Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) released the following statement on the Obama Administration’s refusal to veto an anti-Israel resolution at the UN:
“Today’s abstention by the United States in a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) anti-Israel vote was shameful. Through this action, the U.S. allowed the passage of a resolution condemning Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank. Overwhelming bipartisan majorities from both the House and Senate have urged the Obama Administration to veto one-sided, anti-Israel resolutions, such as the one voted on today, which would only serve to undermine efforts to pursue a lasting peace - a peace which will only be achieved when the Palestinian Authority and its people recognize Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state. Additionally, the United Nations is not the proper venue to resolve this conflict; rather, it must be accomplished through direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. Instead of focusing on Syria, where thousands of innocent civilians are being massacred, the UNSC has decided to continue their obsession on censuring Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East. “Today’s abstention at the U.N. is one final betrayal of a staunch American ally by the Obama Administration on their way out the door. I look forward to working with President-elect Trump and the new Congress to reverse the damage done by the current administration.” |
