Congressman Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) issued the following statement in response to the admission by the Department of Defense at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing that detainees released from Guantanamo Bay have killed Americans:

“The revelation by the Department of Defense that terrorist detainees released from Guantanamo Bay have killed Americans wasn’t surprising. But, even though I fully expected to hear it at some point, it still outrages me,” Bill Johnson said. “Even more concerning is that the Obama Administration continues to push forward efforts to close the terrorist prison, despite this public admission. The mainstream media likes to say that Republicans and Democrats can’t agree on anything. However, wide bipartisan majorities in Congress oppose the President’s misguided, reckless proposal. The testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Committee only underscores that fact.”

Johnson added, “Isn’t the primary duty of our federal government to protect our people? I believe it is. And, now, considering this news and the coordinated terrorist attack in Belgium on Tuesday, it is absolutely clear that the world’s most dangerous terrorists should remain at Guantanamo (an isolated, well-guarded facility), not brought to the U.S. mainland or released elsewhere. Whether it is President Obama attempting to close this prison and burnish his ‘legacy,’ or the next President, whoever he or she may be, I remain steadfastly opposed to closing Guantanamo Bay.”
