Congressman Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) released the following statement after President Obama announced that he has accepted Veteran Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki’s resignation:

“As I’ve said before, there are two types of generals, both with unique talents and capabilities – there are battlefield generals and those that know how to run a bureaucracy as large as the VA. General Shinseki served our country with great honor in the Vietnam War.  He proved himself to be a distinguished battlefield general, and I thank him for his service to our great country. But that doesn’t excuse General Shinseki, or any of the VA staff, from the mistreatment of America’s heroes – our veterans.  The problems at the VA are systemic, and General Shinseki’s resignation alone will not solve all of these very serious issues.  The VA needs major reforms, and it must implement a 21st century business model capable of meeting the needs of America's heroes.  Acting Secretary Sloan Gibson has a tough road ahead of him.  He needs to hit the ground running and immediately address the widespread mismanagement and corruption at the VA.”
