Carrollton native Forrest Patterson received not only his Eagle Scout pin but also a certification from Congressman Bill Johnson (R-OH) at a March 15 Eagle Scout ceremony in Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrollton.
Scoutmaster Mark Walters of Troop 141 presented Patterson with the pin to commemorate his new rank as an Eagle Scout.
Congressman Bill Johnson presented the Eagle Scout with a certificate of recognition and spoke about an art project Patterson submitted for the Sixth District Congressional Art Competition.
Patterson placed as a finalist in the 2013 competition with his depiction of soldiers protecting the American flag, which has been on exhibition in Johnson's district office in Marietta.
Johnson and his staff brought the art work to Trinity Lutheran for Patterson's Eagle Scout ceremony.
Patterson has received 29 merit badges during his time in Boy Scout Troop 141.
He has served as an assistant scoutmaster, was elected to become a member of the Order of the Arrow and was selected for the National Youth Leadership program.
Patterson's Eagle Scout project involved renovations he made to the Conotton Creek Trail.
His efforts included painting the interior of a covered bridge, building an observation point fence to keep visitors to the trail safe, and restoring the picnic area.
Patterson also hand-carved a sign for the rest room and cleaned the area around a flag pole at the trail, after which a new flag was raised.
The Eagle Scout consulted with the Conotton Creek Trail Committee to learn about renovations they desired for the trail before beginning his work.
According to Tom Konst, Carroll County Weights and Measures Inspector and Boy Scouts Merit Badge Counselor who opened the ceremony, only two percent of Boy Scouts have earned the rank of Eagle since the Boy Scouts was founded in 1910.
Patterson is a 2013 graduate of Carrollton High School and is currently a freshman at Kent State University, where he plans to study graphic design.
He is the son of Akron native Shawn Patterson and Carrollton native Rachel Patterson.
