Congressman Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) is pleased to announce that Jenna Britton, a senior at Union Local High School in Belmont is the winner of the 6th Congressional District’s art competition, An Artistic Discovery. “Congratulations to Jenna Britton and all of the students who participated in An Artistic Discovery,” Congressman Johnson said. “It is an honor for me to showcase the artistic talents of eastern and southeastern Ohio students. I look forward to seeing Miss Britton’s artwork hanging in the U.S. Capitol.” Miss Britton’s artwork, entitled “Old Timer’s Train” is done in clayboard. Clayboard is a modern art form of scratchboard in which a wood panel is coated with white clay, covered with black ink and then “scratched” by the artist. Miss Britton’s artwork will hang in the U.S. Capitol with other congressional district winners. Residents of eastern and southeastern Ohio will be able to view Miss Britton’s work while on guided tours of the Capitol building. Other winners’ artwork will be displayed in Congressman Johnson’s Ohio offices in Salem (Columbiana County), Marietta (Washington County), Ironton (Lawrence County) and Washington, D.C. The students’ artwork was judged by a panel of three experts: • Jolene Powell, a McCoy associate professor of art and chair of the Marietta College Art Department. • Bonnie Proudfoot, associate professor in Hocking College’s Department of Arts and Sciences. Ms. Proudfoot is a practicing glass artist and a member of the Riverside Artists Gallery. • Tanya S. Wilder, associate professor at Washington State Community College and Chair of the Evergreen Arts and Humanities Series. Other winners of the 6th Congressional District art competition are: Runner-Up: A charcoal piece titled "Feeding the Heart" by sophomore Jennifer Morris of Canfield High School. Finalist #1: Miss Britton’s oil and pastel, "Fountains of Color." Finalist #2: A pen-and-ink work titled “Rawr” by senior Katie Butler from Union Local High School.
