I am proud to announce the 2023 Congressional Art Competition, “An Artistic Discovery.” Initiated in 1982, the Congressional Art Competition has become an annual event that allows students from all over the country to showcase their artistic abilities. All high school students residing in the 6th Congressional District (Eastern and Southeastern Ohio) are eligible to enter through my office. I strongly encourage teachers and principals to bring this competition to the attention of their students; this is a great opportunity for students to represent their school to both our local region as well as a national audience.
The winning student will have their artwork displayed for one year inside the United States Capitol. In addition, my office will also award a “People’s Choice” award; images of selected artwork will be posted on my Facebook page in late April or early May, and fans will have the opportunity to vote on a final winner. The student whose artwork receives the highest number of “likes” will be the designated winner of the People’s Choice Award, and the work will be displayed in a district office.
All artwork must be two-dimensional and no larger than 26 x 26 x 4 including the frame, and can weigh no more than 15 lbs. Acceptable media, original in design, concept, and execution include:
• Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor
• Drawings: pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, markers
• Collage
• Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints
• Mixed media: use of more than two media such as pencil, ink, watercolor.
• Computer-generated art
• Photography
All submissions are due by Monday, April 14 and can either be mailed or delivered in person to my Marietta (246 Front Street) or Mahoning Valley offices (4137 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite 106); please call in advance if dropping off artwork. A completed release form must be submitted with all entries.
The top five submissions will then be determined by a three-person panel of experts. We will notify the winners during the first week of May. This year, in addition to the panel selections, Johnson will also award a “People’s Choice” award; images of selected artwork will be posted on his Facebook page, and fans will have the opportunity to vote on a final winner. The student whose artwork receives the highest number of “likes” will be designated the winner of the People’s Choice award, and their artwork will be displayed in a district office.
