Budget

Our national debt is staggering; it currently stands at over $19 trillion, and will have doubled during President Obama’s tenure. Each American’s share of that debt is about $60,000. This is not only unsustainable, but it is an immoral burden that we are passing on to our children and grandchildren. Fiscal restraint in Washington has been sorely lacking for far too long. We must ensure that future generations enjoy the same opportunities that previous generations have been blessed with. The bottom line: families must live within their means; it’s past time for Washington to do the same.

President Obama, in his eight years in office, never submitted a balanced budget. Along with my colleagues in the House, I’ve voted for budgets that balance. As a member of the House Budget Committee, I look forward to promoting a budget that not only reigns in spending, but also promotes pro-growth policies that create opportunities for hard-working families. This includes:  repealing President Obama’s broken healthcare law, and replacing it with solutions that put healthcare decisions in the hands of patients and their doctors, and that restores access to quality healthcare for all Americans; strengthening and preserving Medicare and Social Security; and, achieving energy independence.

I believe that budget cuts must start with those in elected office. That's why I’ve voted to cut my own office’s budget on multiple occasions. On top of that, I’ve returned hundreds of thousands of dollars of my office budget to the Treasury, and I’ve voted to prevent members of Congress from giving themselves a pay raise.

America is at a crossroads. We simply cannot continue to choose the unsustainable path of bigger government, more debt, higher taxes, and more regulation.
